Palos Verdes Peninsula

palos-verdes-sealsKnown for its rugged shoreline and cobalt-blue seas, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is a unique and spectacular feature on the southern California coast. Slightly elevated from sea level, the land rises steeply from the sea, forming precipitous cliffs and dramatic views.  The coastline here was used to shoot several scenes for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and it is easy to imagine yourself far from civilization as you watch the restless Pacific throw itself endlessly against the rocks below. In reality, the Palos Verdes Peninsula is wonderfully convenient to Los Angeles, only 20 miles south of LAX, and encompasses the communities of Palos Verdes Estates, Racho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates.

Appreciation for the area’s spectacular beauty has led residents of the Palos Verdes Peninsula to carefully protect it.  There are several nature preserves on the Peninsula that offer excellent opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. There are several equestrian centers and riding clubs here. Another wonderful community treasure is the South Coast Botanical Garden, 87 acres filled with a stunning array of plants, delightfully arranged for your enjoyment. The Garden regularly offers classes to the community and is a popular location for weddings. At the extreme southwestern end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula sits the Pointe Vincente lighthouse, a local landmark and functioning navigation aid, marking the north edge of the Catalina Channel. Residents often use this vantage point for whale-watching.
